PSHE and Personal Development


At Farne Primary School, we strive to develop responsible, respectful and active citizens and we recognise that PSHE is a subject that goes beyond the academic and encompasses the whole child. We aim to teach the skills required for our children to develop spiritually, morally, culturally, mentally and physically across the curriculum through our six puffin values: perseverance, unique, friendship, fair, independence and nurture which are embedded in all that we do.


Through our comprehensive, progressive curriculum, we hope our children will understand and respect themselves and others and to empower them with a voice, equipping them for life and learning. Our children will learn that they are valued and valuable, they are independent people in their own right and that have the power to achieve their goals.


We recognise that each of our children are unique with their own strengths, aptitudes, interests and dreams and as a school we endeavour to support each children to make the most of every opportunity we offer.

The rights and dignity of our children are at the heart of everything we do at Farne, every decision we and they make and every driver for making progress and helping our children to develop as responsible, valued global citizens who want to make a positive contribution to their and our world. We aim for our children to possess a strong understanding of the diverse world around them and to support them in playing a positive role in contributing to an ever-changing society. Drawing upon the five British Values, they will develop their character and acquire the curiosity and confidence to question, challenge and reflect on themselves, their community and the wider world.


We want our children to aspire to achieve and to instil self-belief and a realisation that anything is possible, motivating and challenging them in readiness for future employment opportunities. We intend to ensure children flourish regardless of background, ability or additional needs, to become the best version of themselves they can possibly be. We hope they use their skills and knowledge and draw upon the broad, rich set of experiences our curriculum provides, in order to achieve their  goals. Children will develop their own self-awareness and be able to self-regulate as well as problem solve and be solution-focussed. Through the promotion of equality as well as the celebration of diversity, pupils will thrive together.


Within our increasingly complex world, where our lives are lived seamlessly on and offline, we intend our PSHE curriculum to teach our children the skills they need to stay safe and healthy and to manage their academic, personal and social lives in a positive way. We hope to instil attributes such as resilience, self-esteem, risk-management, team-working and critical thinking, encouraging children to make their own sound decisions, sensible lifestyle choices and to inspire positive change, evolving with the changes and advances in society.
