Design and Technology

At Farne Primary School, our Design and Technology curriculum intends to be inspiring, meaningful and memorable. Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts. We pride ourselves on our thematic teaching approach, which stimulates the creative thinking of our children and fully engages them in their learning. This approach creates a strong foundation for high-quality Design and Technology teaching across all phases. Above all, we  aim for our children to enjoy the practical and purposeful nature of D&T.

Within Design and Technology children will learn and build on a range of practical and technical skills (see progression of skills), testing their ideas and critiquing and evaluating both their own products and the work of others. By working alongside the Art lead, teachers are aware of the clear distinction between the subjects and ensure that they are teaching specifically D&T skills in D&T units.

We aim to inspire pupils to be innovative and creative thinkers who have an appreciation for the product design cycle through drafting design concepts and ideas, creating their product and reflecting on its suitability. We intend to prepare children for life in the wider world, teaching them how to cook and apply the principles of nutrition, allowing them to maintain a healthy lifestyle and equip them with the crucial life skill of how to feed themselves and others affordably and well, in later life. By the time our pupils leave, they will be able to select resources, take risks and solve problems, to become capable citizens.

We hope our D&T curriculum provides the opportunity for those with special talents in this area to discover and nurture them. By participating in practical activities, children can develop an appreciation for being innovative and seeking solutions to problems as future designers. We hope to inspire our pupils to seek their own career paths as designers, inventors and architects beyond Farne. We encourage children to aspire to achieve through the rich experiences offered, embracing first-hand enquiry. Exploration of real-life products, children can consider their own opportunities as future designers, inventors and innovators.

By participating in practical activities with a range of media, we aim for children to become more autonomous and effective problem solvers, both individually and as part of a team, preparing them for tomorrow’s rapidly changing technologies. Ultimately, we aim to build an awareness of the impact of design and technology on our lives and encourage our children to become resourceful, enterprising citizens who will have skills to contribute to future design advancements.
