At Farne Primary School, our Art and Design curriculum intends to engage, inspire and challenge children, allowing them to express their individual creativity, independence, resilience and self-reflection. By giving every child the opportunity to use a range of media, be curious and explore and evaluate their own work and the work of others, we empower children with the skills and confidence to produce their own creative, imaginative artwork.

Within Art and Design, children will learn and build on a range of practical and technical skills (see progression of skills), allowing them to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design.

We aim to equip our children with not only the minimum requirements of the National Curriculum but to prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities, and experiences of later life. We pride ourselves on providing lots of hands-on, experiential learning opportunities and wherever possible, educational visits to help children see how Art and Design has shaped our history and contributed to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation. This does and must, include sustainability into our curriculum to ensure children are prepared for a complex and changing world.

Our Art and Design curriculum aspires to provide children with the relevant skills, knowledge and understanding to enable them to progress to the next stage in their education and to lay a foundation for those who excel and wish to pursue careers within the creative industries. We want them to have no limits to what their ambitions are and to grow up recognising the cross-curricular nature of Art and Design and how it can be applied to a broad range of different fields.

By participating in practical activities with a range of media, we aim to provide children with the opportunity to demonstrate imagination and creative flair together with innovation and critical thinking skills. Our Art and Design curriculum aims to introduce children to a diverse range of artists and their bodies of work, supporting them to grow in confidence, take risks and discover their own artistic style.
